Body Composition in NYC

What Is Body Composition?

Body composition is the percentages of fat, protein, minerals and body water in the human body. At Park Avenue Endocrinology & Nutrition PLLC, we provide body composition analysis to existing patients. A body composition examination can accurately show changes in muscle mass, fat mass, and body fat percentage. The analyzer helps our team of physicians identify what the body is made of. Comparatively speaking, the body composition analyzer also describes weight more accurately than BMI.

How Does The Body Composition Analyzer Tool Work?

The body composition analyzer measures fat mass, fat-free mass, total body water, intracellular water, and extracellular water. This tool uses these measurements to evaluate the risk of health problems such as obesity type 2 diabetes, or metabolic syndrome. And it does this with a high degree of accuracy in only 2 minutes!

Why Is BMI Not Accurate?

Everyone knows the “one size fits all” approach of Body Mass Index (BMI) isn’t effective. BMI calculations don’t consider age, gender, frame size, muscle mass, or fat distribution. Yet, BMI is the weight/mass measurement used in a wide assortment of medical and health decisions.

Is Body Mass Indexing Inaccurate?

BMI doesn’t take into account body composition, instead relying on simple height versus weight formulas. In this context how can you compare one man at 6’ with a 46-coat size and 35-inch waist on the same BMI scale as a 6’ man with a 38- coat size and 35-inch waist? Plus, BMI doesn’t differentiate between overall fat mass and muscle mass.

  • Companies use Body Mass Indexing to slot employees into different levels of their health care plans.
  • Doctors use BMI to judge the health of their patients.
  • Insurers use BMI to deem who is overweight and who isn’t.

But BMI is flawed and can lead to inaccurate health risk assessments.

SECA Body Composition Analyzer Test

Our practice uses the Seca Body Composition Analyzer for disease risk stratifications, precise monitoring of physiologic responses, and compliance therapy. We also use it to provide a comprehensive assessment of the general health and nutritional status of our patients. This allows our team to evaluate a patient’s fat distribution and total cardiovascular risk factors.

Why The Body Composition Analyzer Is Better Than BMI

Rather than simply taking a measure of weight, the Seca Body Composition Analyzer measures fat mass, fat-free mass, total body water, and the water in and outside of cells. It produces medically relevant results that have been validated against the medical science gold standard.

The Body Composition Analyzer Procedure

The Body Composition Analyzer uses an 8-point electrode Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis measurement method. The Seca equipment includes various modules that provide the team at Park Avenue with innumerable diagnostic options. We use the analyzer to produce precise ratios such as fat mass to weight and extracellular to intracellular water. In the past, these types of ratios weren’t possible without additional examinations, creating both more expense and time loss for our patients. Now we can provide a host of measurements in just 2 minutes.
